History of the Windermere marathon
The original Windermere Marathon first took place in 1982 and ran between 1982-86 before being revived by Brathay Trust in 2007.
History of the Windermere Marathon
In 1982 a group of local people got together to form a committee to organise the first Windermere Marathon.
John Nettleton from Kendal AC, Pete Bland, Chairman of Kendal AC, Alan Dodds from Windermere Rotary Club. Pete Bland's wife Anne Bland subsequently won the Ladies category twice in 1984 and 1986. They were joined by Chris Brasher - who of course started the London Marathon and John Disley. They were responsible for bringing in the sponsor, New Balance which made the event possible.
The 1982 marathon attracted 2,600 entries, at an entrance fee of £2.
Course Record
The course record of 2.52.08 was set by Lorna Irving, Border Harriers in 1983.
The men's course record still stands at 2.23.16, set by Mike Critchley, Bolton in 1985.
