73 year old John Dawson, from Lichfield in Staffordshire, hit the media heights today when he was interviewed on the Sony Award winning TalkSports radio station. Presenters from the recently crowned Radio Station of the Year were falling over themselves to interview John, ahead of his record breaking 10 in 10 attempt to become the oldest runner to complete the gruelling 262 mile endurance marathon.
And it was the stations hilarious, long running, Hawksbee and Jacobs afternoon show that secured the interview. Their sideways view of the world of sport was an ideal platform to talk about all things ‘Marathon’.
The pair’s 3.1 million listeners were treated to a journey through John’s life and were no doubt staggered to find that he only started running at the age of 52, after suffering a heart attack.
The huge audience were also treated to some wonderful post-war childhood memories, from John, when he disclosed that he was originally from Manchester. Hawksbee naturally enquired about his football allegiance ahead of this weekend’s Cup Final between Manchester City and Stoke City, to which John vividly described the match day experience to be found at his beloved Maine Road in 1946.
But our crafty septuagenarian superstar quickly recovered his poise, took off his rose tinted glasses, and plugged his ‘Just Giving’ page to the attentive millions. Job done!
