Cold comfort for runners

Traditionally, 10 in 10 runners have stood in the river Brathay at the end of each marathon hoping to benefit from the soothing effects of cold lake district water. This year, cryo treatment for the marathon runners is a little more sophisticated.

We are delighted to have the services of ECB Cold Spa who are offering a cold bath on site for the marathon at Brathay. The unit is set at 5 degrees Celsius and with added aeration makes the treatment much more effective than ice baths (8 degrees Celsius) and if you were to stand in the river this would be a positively tropical 11 degrees Celsius.

In this photo, Steve Edwards and David Wintle, currently third and second after Day 6 of the 10 in 10, are still smiling despite their waist-deep immersion.

The unit is self contained and has a very high rate of filtration – making the unit incredibly clean and free from risk of bacteria.   We recommend treatments of 10 minutes (maximum) although this is up to the individual user.  Rumour has it that Scott Umpleby, Brathay's Race Director, lasted considerably less time than this after he ran the marathon course on Sunday!

The cost of a treatment is £10 which will contribute towards the costs.   If you would like to book a treatment then please email Richard Norden or come along after the marathon. The unit can be found in a black horse box near the finish line of the marathon.   For information about the benefits of  cryo-therapy visit the Cold Spa website
