Steve Edwards has fulfilled his personal challenge of becoming the first athlete in the world to run 500 official marathons in an average finish time of less than 3hrs 30min. His average time works out at just 3 hours 18 minutes. In doing so, he has set a record for the 'fastest 500 marathons ever run by an individual athlete.'
He completed the 500 - two years earlier than expected - on Sunday at the Connemara marathon in Ireland.
'Everything went so well that I had to revise my original goal, which was just to run 500 marathons by 2012,' he said.'No-one who has run 500 marathons has ever done it in anything like the times I did. I surprised myself with what I have been able to do.'
